Canada is easing trade tensions with the U.S. as the country will drop many of its retaliatory tariffs on American goods making items like orange juice, peanut butter, denim, and appliances cheaper for Canadians.
Canada will lift many of its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods covered under the USMCA trade deal, while keeping levies on autos, steel, and aluminum in place. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the move is meant to “match” the U.S. and re-establish freer trade for most goods moving between the two countries. The decision follows his first call with President Donald Trump since trade talks stalled earlier this month.
The rollback will make a wide range of products cheaper for Canadians, including orange juice, peanut butter, denim, appliances, and cosmetics, easing pressure on both consumers and small businesses. Many Canadian firms had struggled under the retaliatory tariffs, with some warning they might not survive a year of the dispute. Talks between the two countries are expected to intensify in the coming weeks ahead of a scheduled USMCA review next year.
